Worlds
Two years ago, ' remembers porter Robinson, 'I only had the inkling of the idea that I wanted to do something different. His first studio album, the postal service, daft Punk's Discovery, it finds an unlikely common ground for Porter's diverse inspirations: Kanye West's Graduation, and an array of orchestral movie scores.
Something nobody else has. And thus begat worlds astralwerks, a cinematic excursion that commingles Porter's technological prowess with his love of evocative melody. I figured that one way to develop a unique identity as an artist would be to combine all my favorite things in music it would result in something that is really personal, a collective expression of my taste and experience.
He prolongs that pop euphoria with the anthemic 'lionhearted, further rewarding the listener with the glitched-out 'Fellow Feeling, ' an avant centerpiece that swells from violin-driven sentiment to industrial static, ' which pushes-and-pulls between ambient sighs and power chords, before settling into palpitating chords.
So he turned down countless dJ offers in 2013 to spend the entire year devoting himself to a process of introspection and reinvention. This is, in many ways, the first true Tycho record. Previous tycho releases came to fruition when an amalgam of songs were nearing completion, but Awake is where music becomes the focus and true expression becomes the result.
Relating closer to post-rock than ambient soundscapes, the record is situated in the present, sounding more like Hansen than drawing from his influences. For years, tycho aka has been known as the musical alias of Scott Hansen, but with the release of Awake his second LP for Ghostly International the solo project has evolved into a three-piece band.
